Dutee Chand is an Indian Sprinter from the State of Odisha. She holds the national record in the 100m category. She the third Indian Women to qualify for the Olympics in 2016. Dutee Chand was born on 3rd February 1996 and she is 24 years of age.

From the tender age of 4, Dutee Chand was inspired by her sister Saraswati Chand. She used to her sister run beside the banks of Brahmani River.
Dutee took part in several school-level competitions and won many prizes. She completed most of her run barefooted as she couldn’t afford shoes.
Dutee Chand after a hard run in her school days won a scholarship in Sports. She was shifted to Govt. Sports Hostel at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. She continued her training and schooling in there.

Hyperandrogenism Controversy
In 2014, Dutee was at her peek career and everybody was hopeful of an Olympic Medal from her. But she was suspended by the International Association of Athletics Federation just before the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
She was suspended because of high androgen Levels in her body, which is normally found in men’s. This test is termed as Female Hyperandrogenism and it counters any advantage for female athletes with high androgen levels. This made Dutee ineligible to participate as a women athlete.
After facing strong criticism from all around, IAAF asked Dutee Chand to take treatments for correction. But Dutee was not ready for a surgery.
Dutee’s Fight against Hyperandrogenism
Dutee challenged the decision at Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in 2015. IAAF policy on Hyperandrogenism was suspended, owing to no concluding evidence was found to support the rule.
Her suspension was removed and she was allowed to compete again.

Dutee Chand’s Comeback
Following her suspension, she took part in many championships and won many medals. She also became the National Record holder in 100m category by clocking 11.22 sec.
In 2016, Dutee clocked 11.24sec in the 26th International Meeting G Kosanov Memorial at Kazakhstan and thereby qualifying for the 2016 RIO Olympics.
She became the 3rd Indian Women Sprinter to participate in the Olympics. But her RIO Olympic stint was unsuccessful as she could not move beyond heats.
In 2019, she became the 1st Indian Women Sprinter to win Gold in the Summer Universiade in Napoli, Italy.
Dutee’s Stand for Caster Semenya
Caster Semenya, the South African Olympic Medallist and World Champion in 800m also faced Hyperandrogenism charges. But she was asked by the Federation to take medications to lower the levels. Following the CAS judgement in 2016 to suspend Hyperandrogenism rule, IAAF modified the rule. This rule was now applicable to the 400m, 800m and 1600m category only.
Dutee offered help to Caster Samenya through her legal team.
Dutee’s Relationship Controversy
Dutee publicly spoke about her same-sex relationship, making her the 1st Indian LGBTQ+ (Intersex) athlete. She was encouraged by the Supreme Court’s decision to legalise Homosexuality in 2018.
Dutee received criticism from her family and village for this act. But she was defiant in her stand.
