Hima Das is an Indian Sprinter(runner) from the state of Assam. She is the current national record holder in the 400m category with a timing of 50.97 seconds. She achieved this feat at the 2018 Asian Games at Jakarta, Indonesia. Hima Das made India Proud by winning 5 Gold Medals in the month of July 2019.
Hima is also the first athlete to win a gold medal in a track event at The International Association of Athletics Federation World U20 Championship in Tampare, Finland.

Hima Das Early Life
Hima Das was born in Kandhulimari Village, Near Dhing town in Nagaon District of Assam. Her father was a good football player and she also started playing football with her brothers. Football was a popular sport in all North-East states.
Hima Das was inspired by Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar from childhood. She always dreamt of wearing the Indian Jersey.
Hima started to participate in school-level competitions but was not successful. But subsequently she won gold medals in all formats like Running, Long Jump, Shotput.
Her first inter school event was at Dhing School Championship organized by Navoday Vidyalay in Dhing.
Hima was initially encouraged by her P.E.T. teacher Samsul Haq at school. He told Hima to start a career in Athletics.
She participated in the district level selection process at Nagaon. At that point of time, she didn’t have running track shoes. Despite she broke all records for her district. She represented Nagaon district in the annual sports event at Sivsagar in Assam.
As athletics was a once in a year affair, she played club football for the rest of the year.
Hima Das Career
In 2017, Hima Das attended a 31 days camp organized Assam Govt. Coach Nippon Das and Nabjit Malakar spotted Hima at the camp and invited her to join them at Guwahati.
She came to Guwahati with only Rs.350 in her hand. She trained for 2 months and went to participate in 14th National Youth Athletics Championship at Hyderabad.
It was Hima’s first official participation for India.
Hima practised in the Sonipat camp organized by Indian Athletic Federation. In May 2017 she represented India in Junior Youth Asian Championship at Bangkok, Thailand.
She came in 6th position in the championship and qualified for World Youth Athletics Championship 2017. Thus she became the first women to qualify for an athletic Championship at world level.
Hima after consultation with Coach Nipon Das started to prepare for 400 Meter track running. Her first run came in 57th National Open Athletics Championship in September 2017 in Chennai. Though she could not succeed in the 400 Mtr. run, she won a gold medal in the 200 Meter event. She clocked 24.26 seconds in the 200 Meter final event.
Turning Point In Her Career
This run became the turning point of her career and she was invited to Indian camp at NIS, Patiala. She trained under Galina Petrovna Bukharina who was the head coach for 400 meter and relay athletes at NIS, Patiala.
Hima competed in the Federation Atheletics Championship and got qualified for 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held at In Australia. She participated in 400 Meter and 4×400 meter relay events.
Hima won gold in 400meter finals in the World U20 Championship at Tampere, Finland in 2018. She became India’s first sprinter to win gold at International Track & Field Event.
Hima Das National Record
Hima qualified for the 2018 Asian Games at Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia. She made a national record by clocking 50.79 sec in the 400m race. But she could manage only a silver medal in 400m in the event. She won a gold medal along with M.R. Poovama, Sarita Gayakwad and V.K. Vismaya in the 4x400m relay race. Hima also won a gold in the mixed 4x400m relay race.
Hima won a gold in 200m event in Poznan Athletics Grand Prix in Poland in 2019.
