Aging comes with lots of wisdom and also has its downsides. The main downside is often manifested in the skin, whereby it losses elasticity, sags, and wrinkles start to appear. These visible signs interfere with the youthful appearance of many individuals, making them lose all confidence when appearing in public. Fortunately, there are ways to deal with that particular problem. You can have a facelift to address all your visible aging signs and restore a youthful and healthy appearance.
The primary role of a facelift procedure is the removal of excess skin while tightening the underlying tissue and muscle. By doing this, the lines, sagging, wrinkles, and jowls of your face are greatly minimized. Here, the skin and tissues that support it are lifted carefully and transposed to a tighter and youthful position. There are non-surgical procedures that perform a similar function, fillers and a thread face lift tighten the skin on the face without surgery, either through dermal fillers or threads to tighten the skin. Read on to understand every step taken in facelift surgery.
Who is Eligible for Facelift Surgery?
As mentioned, most people don’t like their appearance as they age. That is why they look for ways to make them have a more youthful appearance. If you are one of the people feeling low about aging appearance, then you are eligible for facelift surgery. This procedure is not always linked to age. Other indicators include
- Extra, sagging skin in jawlines
- Creases that are deep from the nose to the mouth or chin
- Lost facial volume
- Fatty deposits and loose skin that form a double chin.
If you suffer from the above-mentioned, then you can have a facelift procedure.
The Process of Facelift Surgery
Step: 1 Anesthesia Administration
For any surgery, there must be a substance that will kill the pain. Here, you will choose between the three known types of anesthesia:
- General anesthesia that makes you fully unconscious
- Intravenous sedation that causes twilight sleep
- Local anesthesia using oral sedation keeps you partly awake
Step 2: Incisions
After administering anesthesia, the surgeon will make incisions depending on the technique you choose. Most techniques involve incisions around the ear starting from the sideburn. The incision follows the contours along with the ear and goes around the earlobe, at the back of the ear, straight to the hairline. Some incisions may be added in the hairline, lower eyelids, or right under the chin.
Step 3: Lifting
After making the incisions, the surgeon will carefully lift the deep support layers (that include the connective tissue and SMAS and platysma muscles) of the face and neck. These are then repositioned, tightened and the extra fat is eliminated. After that, the skin is pulled tightly over the lifted tissue.
Step 4: Removal of Excess Skin
After tightening the tissues underneath, the remaining skin is removed. Here, the surgeon conducts the procedure with much care to prevent altering the patient’s facial proportions or features.
Step 5: Closing Incisions
Using fine sutures, staples, and possibly tissue glue, the surgeon carefully closes the incisions. Doing this augments the healing process.
Step 6: Dressing
For the patient to begin recovering, the surgeon must wrap a sterilized surgical gauze around the incision sites. The dressing should remain covered for a minimum of 2 days. Most sutures are removed a week after the procedure, after which the healing is seen in 2-3 weeks post-surgery.
Step 7: Aftercare Treatment
The anesthesia administered will eventually wear off and you don’t want to be left in excruciating pain. Therefore, your surgeon will prescribe pain treatment and provide instructions on how to elevate your head when you lie down. The doctor will also advise you not to engage in strenuous activity. You can apply cold compresses to aid in reducing possible swelling and bruises.
The process of having your face cut doesn’t seem appealing to most. However, the results are to die for. If you are looking for a more youthful appearance, then having a facelift is the easiest way to achieve it.
